Luke 6:46

“Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?”

In this verse, Jesus drives home the necessity of obeying what He has taught. Jesus says that we must act upon His words. This requires soul-searching obedience, down to our very thoughts, motives, and attitudes. It means continually examining ourselves in light of Scripture and improving our character to reflect the Lord. If a person has received a new nature through faith in Christ, that new nature will bear good fruit. We are saved by grace through faith apart from works, BUT the faith that saves us should always result in good works and changed behaviors. Genuine faith is not simply intellectual acknowledgment. Genuine faith submits to the lordship of Jesus, resulting in a changed life of progressive purity. Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Thus Jesus is not teaching that we must achieve sinless perfection in order to enter His kingdom. Rather, He is teaching us that faith without works is dead (James 2:17, 26). Meaning if we are not walking in obedience to the Lord and turning from our old sinful nature than our faith is not genuine. May we continue to examine our faith, thoughts and, motives and walk in obedience to Lord.
